CITY301-401 "Adaptability in Urbanism" Mixed Studio is a practicum course that focuses on the social, spatial, and economic development of cities, city parts, and regions by combining studio work with real urban practices. The studio covers the areas of urban planning, adaptability, flexibility, self-organization, and responsiveness in urbanism.
Planning process of cities includes a wide variety of uncertainties such as economic crisis, epidemics, natural disasters, climate change and global warming, the rapid change seen in technology, urbanization, demography and so on. In this new urban world, where the only constant is change, there stays almost no room for the ambition to achieve predefined outcomes and long-term estimations specifically for the domains of city planning. Spatial planners and decision makers should, therefore, find new, flexible, dynamic, and adaptable ways of spatial decision making.
The uncertainty times of the world can also be seen as an opportunity to embrace new paradigms of urban development. Hence, the mixed studio of TEDUCITY adopts adaptive approach to planning this year, which is about designing not only the cities’ itself, but also the conditions that support city capacities to respond changing circumstances. On this basis, the studio aims to find and examine adaptable aspects (approaches, spatial decisions, and design frameworks) of urban planning and design to create flexibly developed, dynamic and self-organized cities, their parts, and regions.
Objectives of the studio: To develop adaptable, dynamic, and flexible ways (approaches, strategies, spatial decisions, and design frameworks) of urban planning and design. To apply multiple data sources and analytical techniques to identify critical needs and opportunities of adaptability in urbanism. To design a problem-oriented and flexible decision-making process in urban planning. To experience collaboration and individual work whenever needed
Learning outcomes: In the end of the course successful students will be able to: Apply theoretical framework on adaptable planning and urban design with practice; design a planning process specific to a problem or a potential; experience a group work of different fields of interests in city planning; solve the problems in complex (urban) environments; understand the conceptual and philosophical motives behind planning and design processes; observe and experience the city with a new perspective.
Studio principles: This year the mixed studio of TEDUCITY hosts third- and fourth-year students together. During the year the third- and fourth-year students will be subject to the same program, but in group work, fourth year students will act as the team leaders. The primary expectation from the team leaders is to guide the group members in building a comprehensive and consistent design and planning process.
Studio organization:
Context- Seeks to set (understand) the study area within a frame of reference. Urban context- the study area and its attributes. Theoritical context- the research topics, spatial analytical studies (scale free)
Concept- Seeks to develop a conceptual approach with spatial alternatives and scenarios to solve determined problems conceptual and spatial diagrams, urban planning concepts and vision, design concepts.
Content- Spatial / design proposals, sketches, design ideas, spatial models (any kind of spatially expressed proposal or framework).
