2019 - 2021
"The hub will further develop and extend the existing strong in-country scientific knowledge, data management, institutional capacity and preparedness activities for earthquake risk management to address multi-hazard risk-informed urban development. It also seeks to engage with citizens and institutions to transform their thinking towards multi-risk-based development and civil society, using new technologies to enhance citizen engagement with risk, and the empowerment of citizens to manage risk themselves. The first two years of this programme will focus on building a partnership between public authorities, universities, local communities and other stakeholders in Istanbul to conduct work on three interlinked themes: 1. Multi-hazard data collection, modelling and interpretation for high resolution hazard identification and characterisation 2. Evaluation and characterization of the multi-hazard physical, economic, societal and livelihood risk of different vertical and horizontal urban development scenarios. 3. Holistic multi-hazard risk mitigation measures that can be integrated into Istanbul’s future urban development, and that are developed with full stakeholder and community involvement. The three themes are designed such that progress can initially be made in parallel (first 6 month) but each will require and will strongly benefit from new knowledge and data developed in the others."
