English provides a common space where people build relationships across borders and communicate with each other. It is a powerful medium for the formation of societies having shared understanding of global issues. English as a foreign language (EFL) education thus plays a significant role in presenting the issues about sustainability and influences beliefs and attitudes of learners through the discussion of global issues across a wide range of teaching and learning materials. In this respect, language textbooks, as common elements of classrooms, are significant as they can convey messages about social, cultural and environmental issues and help transformation of individuals and society towards sustainable practices. Besides language textbooks, the value of digital storytelling as a pedagogical tool in helping promote foreign language learning and sustainable development is highlighted by the related literature. Digital storytelling blends story telling with the use of digital media such as texts, pictures, narration, music and video and narrates a story about a specific theme or topic with a particular point of view. Digital stories also have the potential to educate about globalissues rapidly as well as influencing a change of behavior in learners since they can be widely disseminated through the Internet.
This project aims to explore the inclusion of sustainability themes in Ministry of National Education (MONE) A2 level middle school English textbook, Let’s Learn English and encourage the promotion of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by supplementing the book with digital storytelling. With this aim, the project will adopt action research design and will be carried out in several phases. The first phase begins with the content analysis of the textbook. To achieve this, learning objectives, unit themes, target vocabulary and language tasks will be reviewed to explore whether and how sustainability is addressed in the textbook. In this process, a framework based on the targets of the United Nations (UN) SDGs will be developed. Then each unit will be systematically analyzed comparing the SDG targets on the framework to the content presented in the textbook. In the second phase of the study, digital stories compatible with the themes and language foci of the textbook will be prepared as self-study materials for learners. These digital self-study materials could both support language learning and help raise awareness of global issues through sustainable stories embedded in their content. After the preparation of the digital stories, videos will be uploaded to the Internet and broadcast in social media so that they will be readily available for language learners. Additionally, teenagers with A1+ English level proficiency who seek opportunities for more exposure to and practice in English can benefit from the digital stories while learning for sustainability. The project is expected to contribute to the promotion of education for sustainable development in foreign language education with both its research topic, methodology and the suggested pedagogical tool.
