"Previous research on traumatic memories focused on why traumatic memories are not integrated well with other memories to understand intrusive memory phenomena in trauma related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, inhibitory mechanisms in traumatic memories have not been studied. The present study aims to understand the inhibition mechanism in remembering traumatic experiences by using Emotional Stroop Task (EST) in a non-clinical population. In EST, response time of the participant to name colors of words presented is measured. Slower responses indicate one’s poor ability to inhibit emotions associated with the word. Seventy participants (18-22 years of age) will be asked about their childhood traumatic memories first. Next, participants assigned to experimental group will receive Emotional Stroop Task consists of negatively charged words, in contrast participants assigned to control group will receive Emotional Stroop task consists of neutral words. After the Stroop Task, their memory about childhood traumatic experiences will be measured again. We expect that participants in experimental group will less likely to inhibit negative words and as a result their recall performance for their childhood traumatic experiences will be higher than participants in control group who received neutral words in Stroop Task. These results will highlight the importance of one's inability to inhibit negative emotions in remembering traumatic experiences."
