Proje Özeti

"Architecture -besides its spatial references- has been defined as a political and ideological agent in various cases throughout history, to form or represent the national identity and to disseminate the political/national statements through changes in the cities, environment and social life. Development of Ankara as the capital of New Turkey after the declaration of the Republic can also be considered as an example of defining architecture as an ideological agent, with an aim to create a new modern city at the center of the country. In Jansen Plan, finalized in 1932, Cebeci District was determined as the area for higher education, and through the already existing educational buildings and the newly constructed ones, Kızılay-Dikimevi axis and its surrounding was developed as an educational axis of Ankara. Today, some of these buildings keep their original function (Ankara University Faculty of Medicine and Hospitals, Mülkiye and Hukuk Fakültesi, Kurtuluş Primary School), some were refunctioned in time (Conservatory as Mamak Cultural Center), and some were refunctioned in the same field (TED College as TED University). In years, this zone has been subjected to several social, political and spatial transformations. Its location as being close to the city center, being between the old and new city, daily traffic of campus users and the superimposing layers of urban transfer (vehicular and pedestrian) altered the morphological and spatial formation of the mentioned zone. Within the scope of this project, a multilayered database of the area mentioned above as the educational zone will be constructed with two focal points: TED University Campus and Ankara University Cebeci Campus. Two theses, “Place – Identity – Change in Ankara University Cebeci Campus as An Issue of Modern Heritage Conservation” by Azize Elif Yabacı and “TED Ankara College: An Educational Institution and Its Places of Urban Life in Kolej District” by Melis Acar have implied the importance of these two campuses in relation to their surroundings, which will be considered as key sources in this study. As the content of the database, in addition to digitalization of the visual sources as aerial photographs and the development plans of the area, the visualization of the information studies till today will be studied and archived. The period to be examined is chosen as the 1930 till today in reference to the construction of the first buildings in both campuses. Related with the location of its campus, one of the main concerns in the vision of TED University is having a close relationship with the city – in short being a city-university – “to produce knowledge and create solutions through interaction with the town and the society”. Besides, conducting intense research on Ankara is also considered to be a mission of the Faculty of Architecture at TEDU. In that sense the proposed archival study and database design will both support the Faculty mission and make use of the existing research potential at the Faculty and provide a visual and multi-layered knowledge base for the citizens, students and researchers."
