"Hazmat transportation risk assessment problem will be handled with a new approach in the project by focusing the hazmat transportation in Istanbul. The proposed Project is considered to fulfill gaps in two important ways: First, when the literature is searched, only the past hazmat accidents are considered to find the hazmat transportation risks on the roads. The effects of hazmat vehicle speed on the accidents, the effects of hazmat types, the number of other types of accidents on the same roads, type of roads, and traffic flow on the roads are not considered in the researches which focus on the hazmat risk assessments on the roads. Our project is going to include those subjects and it is considered to contribute the hazmat risk assessment literature. Second, the hazmat risk analysis in Turkey especially considering the İstanbul case will be examined deeply and the road risk map for İstanbul will be prepared. Next, the proposals will be prepared by analyzing the methodologies with a GIS-based framework which decrease the hazmat transportation risk on the road network. While preparing the proposals, we will also be taken into account the fact that total travel cost on the network should not be increased. Our project will be the first study in Turkey with this respect."
