The way
multiculturalism is reflected in student lesson books affects learners'
perspectives on life and other cultures. In Turkey, which hosts people from
many cultures, learners need to be aware of multiculturalism. This study, it is aimed to determine
whether different cultural elements are reflected in primary school lesson
books, and if so, from which point of view, and to present a detailed
analysis and comparison with the series of Oxford Publishing, one of the
international publications. The research will examine the activities in 11
English student books used in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of primary education
in the 2018-20129 academic year and in 2019 printed "Learn With Us"
books of Oxford Publishing. Multiculturalism has been taken as the basis for
determining criteria. In this research, the existing situation in terms of
books, daily life, living conditions, interpersonal relations, values,
beliefs and attitudes, body language, social traditions, ceremonial
behaviors, national geography, and standardization elements will be examined
from a multicultural perspective. In addition to all these criteria, the
books will also be analyzed in terms of reflecting the source culture, target
culture, and international culture. Besides, an interview with 10 primary
school English teachers has been planned from multiple schools in Turkey that
host students from different cultures. Thanks to this interview, the
teachers’ perspectives on multiculturalism, as well as the thoughts of the
books that are used in the lessons about the multicultural elements and the
effects of existing students from different cultures in the classroom
environment have been reflected in our study. The research is a qualitative
study that is considered analytical research. |
