Proje Özeti

"As the institutions in and the national culture of the society continually changes, and since such changes demand new adaptations and a reconsideration of the values of the preceding generations, a need for character and values education has emerged. Thus, values education has gained institutional attention in the K-12 education in Turkish educational system as well in the last 15 years. Children’s storybooks are widely used to serve this endeavor, yet the quality of the content in these storybooks published in Turkey in terms of which social psychological constructs they must contain for an efficient value-concept representation requires investigation. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is threefold. First, we aim to identify the cognitive constructs that are associated with value concepts. Second, we will generate guidelines for how the identified cognitive structures need to be presented in the stories based on relevant empirical research. Finally, by using this list of guidelines as a coding scheme, we will analyze the content of stories in Turkish storybooks which are claimed by the publishers to be values education materials. A qualitative analysis of the contents of the storybooks will be employed. This analysis will be based on the guidelines which will be developed as part of this project by the project team. Each storybook will be analyzed by two project team members, and the interrater agreement will be computed by using Cohen’s Kappa coefficient. The results will be summarized as a table of guidelines showing the percentage of presence of each guideline in the total sample of storybooks, which will render identifying the strengths and weaknesses in the storybooks for values education. The outputs of the proposed study are evaluated as having the potential to guide teachers, parents, storybook writers as well as governmental institutions in selecting among, and advancing the contents of, children’s storybooks which claim to facilitate values education."
