Proje Özeti

"Abstract Understanding the statistical concepts and using them in the daily life, and business are very crucial. The usage of statistics as a mathematical language is increasing in the fields from educational programs and society. Students need to define, arrange, visualize, interpret, and share the numerical information which they obtain it in different forms. One of the most important purposes of the middle school mathematics education is to make students obtain and use this kind of abilities. However, some studies in the literature demonstrate that some mathematics instructors and students suffer in teaching and learning statistics, respectively. The researchers indicate that developing teaching methods for statistics is very important in order to overcome the experienced difficulties and to increase the statistical literacy. The aim of this study is to develop interdisciplinary teaching toolkit prototypes with a specific focus on statistical literacy for the use of middle school mathematics teachers. This instructional toolkit will include interdisciplinary teaching materials (for example with the main disciplines such as Turkish, science, social studies and the other disciplines such as information technologies, technology and design, visual arts, music, physical education and sports). The way to do this is to make statistics more meaningful to middle school students by connecting it to daily life and to the other disciplines. The results of the design process of this interdisciplinary statistic teaching toolkit would provide concrete examples of activities and materials for teachers who want to (1) raise awareness about statistical elements used in other disciplines and in real life and (2) conduct meaningful lessons related to statistical literacy."
