Proje Özeti

Media consumption has grown exponentially in modern society and has become a significant part of daily life. Apart from serving as a platform of entertainment and recreation, it helps people to access to the latest news. Unfortunately, in addition to its benefits, media consumption has severe side effects, especially considering the increasing number of femicides in Turkey. Femicide is especially a pressing issue in Turkey, where the number of femicides increased from 68 in 2008 to 417 in 2023. This

problem has significant psychological effects not only on the direct victims, but also those indirectly exposed to femicide news through the media. Although it is known from other traumatic events that indirect victims may experience similar psychological symptoms to those of direct victims; unfortunately, the experiences of indirect victims remain underexplored in the academic literature.

The aim of this study is to examine the vicarious traumatization symptoms in Turkish women (aged 18-35) exposed to femiciderelated news through the media. More specifically, it will focus on symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and posttraumatic stress. Moreover, the contribution of the protective factors (personal resilience, community resilience, feminist community resilience and coping strategies) in reducing these negative consequences will also be examined. The results are expected to reveal both the negative psychological consequences associated with media-based traumatic exposure and the protective factors that can mitigate these effects. Through this, the study aims to make significant contributions

to the formulation of psychosocial interventions aimed at enabling women to achieve resilience in the event of such traumatic occurrences. Furthermore, the research also aims to increase the sensitivity towards the needs of indirect victims of femicides, which can ensure that they receive appropriate psychosocial support. Through addressing this gap in the literature, this study will amplify the voices of indirect victims and promote a deeper understanding of their needs.
