Project Abstract

"The main purpose of this study is to determine how context-based items are addressed in textbooks which are used as main course materials by teachers. Specifically, this study aims to determine the quality of the items within the framework of the principles of item writing regardless of whether they are presented as traditional or context-based, and to transform the items presented in traditional type into context-based items by making suggestions for improvement. Qualitative research approach will be used in this study. The 8th grade mathematics textbooks published by MoNE and TED Ankara College constitutes the sample of the study. The questions and examples included in the textbooks will be analyzed using content analysis. Data collection will be done in three dimensions such as type of context, mathematical reasoning, and quality of item. For the first part of study, each item will be given location code in the book and codes for each dimension. For the second part of the study, the criteria and forms in this study will be used in the preparation of the sample item list consisting of the examples of conventional items converted into qualified context-based items. Considering the data set and coding protocol of the study, all procedures will be performed with the help of MAXQDA software. Teachers who are the main users of the textbooks, students, education politicians and other researchers can utilize from the results of this research."
