Proje Özeti

Water availability has been a prerequisite to urban development since first settlements in history. There are two main factors that affect and alter water demand in urban areas globally: climate change and associated changing precipitation patterns, and rising populations in almost all urban centers globally as well as in Turkey. Reduction of water resources poses a danger to sustain or to expand the level of urbanization in major metropolitan areas, besides other major impacts to industry, agriculture, and economies. The proposed project aims to statistically project water demand of the metropolitan Ankara region by analyzing both population trends and precipitation and water availability trends in the coming decades. Potential technical solutions and policies will be investigated should a shortfall be predicted as a result of the analysis. Actual precipitation data will be collected throughout the project duration on the TEDU campus, and results will be used to assess the effectiveness of water collection mechanisms for outdoor irrigation purposes by taking into account the time-lag between raining season in Ankara and irrigation season at TEDU when water is most needed. Therefore, whether rainwater harvesting alone could offset irrigation water demand on TEDU campus will also be explored. Results of the study are planned to be published as a research article in a nationally indexed and peer-reviewed engineering journal as well as presented at an academic conference to disseminate knowledge and to attract attention to a potential problem that will hinder development in coming years. The project will provide benefits to the undergraduate student such as providing hands-on research experience and facilitating her future academic goals, while also advancing the goals and reputation of TED University as an institution where active research is conducted.
