Studio 302&402 Adaptability in urbanism: “Get into the Act” is a follow-up studio of CITY 301&401 mixed studio. To remind, there were basically three legs of Studio 301&401 as: collaboration and peer-learning; problem-based learning; thinking by drawing. In a collaborative environment of the mixed studio, students in groups set an urban problem in Konya and directed their own way through seeking planning and design solutions to the problem under the themes and principles given. Students were therefore asked to end the semester with not the master plans or urban design projects, but the alternatives, design, and planning ideas through spatial diagrams, sketches, and models. Students, thereby, engaged more in a search for solutions not only the facts of solutions but also the process.
Studio 302&402 is a follow-up studio of Studio 301&401 and aims to “get into the act” by developing adaptable, dynamic, and flexible solutions to urban planning and urban design problems. Unlike the first semester’s studio, it is now an action-oriented studio which means that students will be asked to work by individual studies that should be somehow related to their first-year themes, issues, and final spatial proposals produced by the groups. Keep that final proposals of the first semester will always be open to any kind of revision during the second semester.
Objectives of the studio:
To design a problem-oriented decision-making process in urban planning and urban design
To experience individual work on a challenging issue related to urban planning and urban design
To make the students aware that problem solving in complex urban environments is different than solving complex problems
To apply multiple data sources and analytical techniques to identify critical needs and opportunities of urban planning
Learning outcomes:
Professional experience | Provide real world work environment and practices Gain process design skills in planning at any relevant scale Learn the planning and plan-making process Understand various roles of planner and different fields of expertise in planning |
Communication | Understanding relationship between plans and physical reality Graphical/visual skills and oral presentation |
Learning by doing | Experience individual work and collaboration when it is needed Recognize importance of flexibility in decision-making process Apply theoretical framework on social planning, economic development, urban design, and urban modeling with practice |
Problem solving | Make problem analysis, problem definition and solve the problems in complex environments Develop critical thinking ability |
