Özet:

This thesis examines ambiguous spaces that emerge due to the coexistence of particular qualities of interior-exterior and public-private space on Atatürk Boulevard. With the Turkish Republic's proclamation, Capital Ankara and Kızılay District, which entered the rapid transformation process, offered a spatiality to the increasing population. The transformation found a response in the building stock and the urban space. It also triggered the emergence of complex and modern spatial situations. Kızılay District, which became the city's Central Business District in the 1950s, hosted numerous passages, carsıs, business centers, and administrative buildings. Besides, public interior and urban spaces, cinemas, restaurants, city parks, and housing projects served the urbanites in the district. The continuous reconstruction and transformation process in the Yenişehir blurred the border between interior-exterior and public-private spaces. By reviewing the modern architecture literature focusing on interior-exterior relationships with a nonlinear historical approach, a lens is created to evaluate these ambiguous spaces. The subject of the thesis emerged as a result of exploratory walks focusing on the embodied experiences on Atatürk Boulevard. Hence, phenomenology is adopted, and Peter Zumthor's Atmosphere theory is instrumentalized for an architectural approach. The created lens is equipped with the Atmosphere theory and used in the exploratory walks to the ambiguous places on Atatürk Boulevard. The thesis aims to examine the ambiguous interior and exterior spaces and construct a taxonomy of interiority and exteriority regarding the effective parameters in the construction or emergence of these spaces.
