Biography
Deniz Eyüce Şansal graduated from Galatasaray University, Faculty of Communication, in 2008, ranking second in her class. She completed her M.A. in Art History at the University of Barcelona in 2011 and received her Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies from Bahçeşehir University in 2019. She also studied at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the University of Kent in Canterbury within student exchange programs, taking courses in cinema, art history, Spanish language and culture, literary history, and theory.
In her undergraduate and master’s theses, she explored the relationship between early cinema and twentieth-century painting, focusing on synesthesia and visual music. Her doctoral dissertation analyzed the revolutionary-period works of the French painter Jacques-Louis David through the lens of tactility and sensory perception in art and aesthetics.
She began her academic career at Bahçeşehir University as a research assistant and later continued as a lecturer in the Departments of Photography and Video, and Animation. During this period, she taught undergraduate courses such as History of Cinematic Images, Aesthetics, Image Theory, Icons and Symbols, Topics in Art History, European Art, and Art–Culture–Society, as well as graduate-level courses in Turkish, Research Methods and Visual Culture. She also coordinated the Graduation Project course and served as the faculty’s Erasmus–World Exchange Academic Coordinator. In addition to translating from Spanish and Catalan, she translated François Soulages’s The Aesthetics of Photography from French into Turkish.
Since November 2022, she has been a lecturer at TED University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Basic Sciences, where she teaches Critical Perspectives on Humanity. She also translated Claire Raymond’s Women Photographers and Feminist Aesthetics from English into Turkish.
Her research focuses on tactility in visual culture, olfactory symbolism in Western art, contemporary olfactory art, the sensory and intersensory dimensions of aesthetics, early photography–painting relations, and sensory culture studies.
