Özet

Understanding the organizational structure of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the United States is critical for grasping the rationale behind their implementation of support mechanisms for refugees, particularly in the context of language and literacy programs. NGOs operating in the United States provide a wide range of services to refugees, including civic education, job readiness and finding jobs, financial support, cultural adaptation support, and the acquisition of literacy skills for accessing these services. NGOs face numerous challenges in implementing policies and facilitating the participation of refugees in language programs. However, not all programs offer a culturally responsive approach to cater to refugee family needs. Offering literacy and language instruction that respects refugees’ religious beliefs and promoting health literacy are challenging demands. Despite these challenges, NGOs are vital in facilitating resettlement and providing literacy support for refugees. Yet, it is important to address the intersectionality of these challenges to improve the quality of literacy services and generate culturally sensitive resettlement discourses.
