This study examines the relations between China and Japan from the 1950s until today to determine if the two countries are engaged in a cooperative or a com- petitive bilateral relationship. In the study, it is argued that in the Cold War period Si- no-Japanese relations were based primarily on mutual interests whereas in the post-Cold War period self-interests outweigh mutual interests. In other words, the relationship between China and Japan moved from a cooperative to a competitive relationship. This is done by first focusing on two mainstream International Relations theories, neorealism and neoliberalism, and how these theories understand and define world politics, and thereafter applying them to historical developments in Sino-Japanese relations from the early 1950s to 2017. This way this study aims to analyze fluctuations in Sino-Japanese relationship from the Cold War years to the end of 2017.
