Özet

This chapter traces the evolution of Türkiye’s border security policies against the backdrop of the Syrian conflict. Commencing with the historical context of extensive border demining, the narrative navigates through shifting political landscapes, leading Türkiye to fortify its borders. The chapter delves into key milestones, illustrating the complex interplay of domestic and international factors. The spillover effects of the Syrian conflict, coupled with rising terrorist activities around the borderlands, direct Türkiye to pivot towards a stricter border security stance. This transition involves the implementation of security practices such as the construction of concrete walls, and watchtowers, and the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies, reflecting a comprehensive response to emerging challenges. Furthermore, the integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and cutting-edge technologies underscores Türkiye’s dedication to increasing technology use to ‘secure its borders.' The chapter further explores Türkiye’s proactive counterterrorism measures, including cross-border operations and the establishment of a buffer zone along the Syrian border. It particularly focuses on Operation Euphrates Shield, Operation Olive Branch, and Operation Peace Spring, elucidating Türkiye’s commitment to addressing conceived security threats in the region. In conclusion, the chapter emphasizes Türkiye’s multifaceted strategy, harmonizing security imperatives amidst the challenges posed by the Syrian conflict.
