Özet
Humans have a strong ability and inclination to remember their past. Central fields examining the personal past include the study of autobiographical memory and of life stories. These complementary fields have developed quite separately. The goal of this chapter is to identify factors that have kept these fields operating separately and to argue for greater integration of autobiographical memory into life story research. We take a unique approach. In the first section, we review two seminal works that continue to be highly cited: from the autobiographical memory literature, Conway and Pleydell-Pearce (2000), and regarding life stories, McAdams (2001). In the second section, we identify several factors that may have kept the two fields operating in parallel and then envision how autobiographical memory may be seen as more foundational to the life story. Championing the life story, Jerome Bruner noted: no story, no life. We would add: no memory, no story.
