Özet

Social interaction has long been recognized as a central aspect of L2 use, learning, teaching, and teacher education in technology-rich environments. The role of various modalities of mediated interaction (i.e., text, audio, and video) has been extensively investigated in the field of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and from the perspective of second language acquisition (SLA). However, despite the extensive research in CALL and SLA, especially the agentive role and the interactional affordances of the different modalities, technologies, tools, and objects available in technology-mediated L2 interaction remain unexplored. This introductory chapter gives an overview of the aims of this volume and of the ways in which this book addresses diverse research gaps. The chapter situates the volume at the interface of SLA, video-mediated L2 interaction (L2 VMI), and multimodal conversation analysis (CA). Furthermore, it highlights CA as a data-driven, participant-relevant method that affords researchers with a robust starting point for the investigation of social conduct in technologically rich environments. Lastly, the chapter describes the rationale and contributions of the present book that draw on CA with the aim to uncover the context-specific complexities of L2 VMI. It ends with a note on ways in which current and upcoming research can significantly advance understanding of the affordances of using CA as a research methodology in technologically rich environments.
