The interconnection project between Turkish grid and the ENTSO-E CESA system is almost finished. According to feasibility analysis based on computer simulations, inter-area oscillations around ∼0.15 Hz is expected once the interconnection is established. Unless countermeasures are taken, these oscillations could grow to dangerous amounts which will result in disconnection of Turkish grid from the interconnection. This paper analyzes the effect of such measures based on computer simulations. These measures are: 1) Parameter optimization of the governors of considerable size hydroelectric units in Turkey; 2) Parameter optimization of power system stabilizers (PSS), 3) Controller modification of static VAR compensators (SVC) existing in steel melting arc furnaces that are supplied directly from the transmission system, 4) Controller modification of ±50 MVAR STATCOM designed for voltage regulation, and 5) Application of breaking resistors The results illustrate the positive contribution of each measure to the damping performance of the system. The study includes conclusive recommendations.
