Türk işçilerin yurtdışına göçleri çoğunlukla akrabalık ve memleket bağları üzerinden gerçekleşir fakat Amerika’nın Rochester şehrinde bu tanımın dışında kalan bir örnek mevcuttur. Rochester’a 1960’larda göç etmeye başlayan Türklerin tamamı terzilerden oluşmaktaydı. Mardin’den Amerika’ya göç etmiş bir kişinin önerileri ve gazetede yayınlanmış bir haber sayesinde daha önce birbirini tanımayan bir grup Türk terzi kendilerini Rochester’da buldular. Kendilerinden daha önce Rochester’a gelen birkaç yüksek eğitimli diğer Türk göçmenlerle kaynaştılar ve 1969 yılında Rochester Türk Cemiyeti’ni kurdular.
Bu cemiyet yıllarca Rochester’daki Türklerin dayanışmasını sağladı ve Türk göçmenlerin Rochester’a uyum sağlamalarına yardım etti. Yıllar içerisinde siyasi ve dini ayrışmalardan etkilenmesine rağmen Rochester Türk Cemiyeti halen Rochester Türk toplumunun merkezinde yer alıyor.
“Rochester’daki Türkler” yurtdışına işçi göçü tarihinde istisnai bir konumda olan Rochester’daki Türkleri kimlik ve göç sosyolojisi açısından araştıran bir çalışmadır. Rochester Türk Cemiyeti’nin tarihsel gelişimi üzerinden göçmenlerde Türklük algısının değişimini ele almakta ve etnik kimliklerin Amerikan kimliği içerisindeki yeri hakkında tespitlerde bulunmaktadır.
The international migration of Turkish workers has been mostly based on kinship and hometown networks, but there is an example in the city of Rochester NY that falls outside this definition. All of the Turks who started migrating to Rochester in the 1960s were tailors. Thanks to the suggestions of a person who had migrated from Mardin to America and a news article published in a newspaper, a group of Turkish tailors who had not previously known each other found themselves in Rochester. They mingled with several other highly educated Turkish immigrants who had come to Rochester before them and founded the Turkish Society of Rochester in 1969.
This society provided solidarity for Turks in Rochester for years and helped Turkish immigrants adapt to Rochester. Despite being affected by political and religious divisions over the years, the Turkish Society of Rochester still remains at the center of the Rochester Turkish community.
“Turks in Rochester” is a study that investigates an exceptional example of Turkish workers emigrants, in terms of identity building and the sociology of migration. It examines the changing perception of Turkishness among immigrants through the historical development of the Turkish Society of Rochester and makes observations about the interplay between Turkish and American identities.
