Özet

Similar to many other social contexts, sport has been shaped around gender discrimination. Gender stereotypes, which are common unseen regulators of opportunities and relationships, have an important role in sports psychology in this respect. Participation in sports can vary depending on the gender of the selected branch and many other variables, such as performance, selfesteem and achievement motivation. Besides, the athletes choose the sports branch that is appropriate for their gender role and in particular women can experience some negative psychological effects. The difference in self-confidence levels between males and females is related to the perception of gender as appropriate to the sport performed. In psychological interventions and evaluations, a individualized approach should be adopted depending on the appropriateness of the sports branch to the gender role and its influence on the athlete.
